Enuma Okoro

Enuma Okoro is a Nigerian-American author, writer, theologian, lecturer, and curator. Born in New York City, she grew up in Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, England, Tunisia and the USA. She is a weekend columnist for The Financial Times, and her globally read column “The Art of Life” explores how the intersection of art, culture, contemplative and embodied spiritual traditions, and ecology can speak to the human condition and how we live. Her wider research interests include art as a site for quiet interrogation and deepening and expanding our capacity for reflection and transformation, women’s spiritual and creative practices and experiences, and ways of documenting embodied wisdom, and the dialogue between movement (pilgrimage, migrations, re-locations, and bodily gestures), place, space and interiority. Inherent in these interests is the consideration of how consciousness can be increasingly shifted from western and patriarchal constructs, expanding the possibilities for collectively interrogating how we experience, know and live, including attention to the wisdom of more than human ecosystems. She teaches seminars and college courses, most recently as a guest professor at Bard College, Berlin where she introduced and taught a new course for the art history department. Beyond her focus on the arts, Okoro is trained in Psychology, Family Systems Therapy, and Theology. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University and is a certified Spiritual Director in the Ignatian Tradition (Jesuits).

Her first book Reluctant Pilgrim was recognized by USA Book News as a 2010 Best Books Award Winning Finalist for Religion and received the 2011 Indie National Book Awards Winning Finalist in Spirituality and Non-Fiction.

Her fiction and poetry are published in anthologies, and her nonfiction essays and articles have been featured in The New York Times, The Financial Times, Aeon, Vogue USA, The Erotic Review, The Cut, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Bazaar, NYU Washington Review, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and more.
